During the pandemic and physical distancing, many families may feel reluctant to schedule child health appointments. But even during COVID-19, there is a still a need for regular immunizations and checkups. OPS Member Ellen Stevenson, MD, MPH, was quoted in a recent New York Times article about calling on pediatricians during the pandemic.
In the December 21st article, Dr. Stevenson told the Times that she had seen “cases where parents waited on skin infections, so they worsened to the point that children needed oral antibiotics, rather than soaks and antibiotic ointment.”
She also mentioned hurdles to virtually accessing early intervention services, as well as how the pandemic impacts some children’s access to food and housing.
Dr. Stevenson is a professor of pediatrics at Oregon Health & Science University.
