On April 17, OPS presented our first virtual conference, Keeping Kids Healthy in a Changing Climate. Attendees left with resources for empowering their patients with more time outdoors, as well as ideas about how pediatricians are uniquely suited to address climate change at practice and community levels.
OPS member Dr. Jennifer Bass discussed nature as a tool for health and suggested ways to help patients get outside, including using children’s books about the environment. Other speakers covered ways to talk to children about climate change; the effects of wildfire smoke; and the need for culturally specific outdoor spaces and experiences.
AAP chapter climate advocates from from Montana, Puerto Rico and California shared ways they are making a difference in their states, from testifying at public hearings in support of cleaner air, to influencing colleagues and community members by cleaning trash from local beaches.
