The Oregon Pediatric Society Board of Directors had their Fall meeting earlier this month. Part of the packed agenda included an exciting moment for our organization as we welcomed a new slate of Board officers.
Welcoming our new Board officers
The Oregon Pediatric Society is proud to welcome Jennifer McCall, DO, FAAP, as our new Board President. Dr. McCall, a Newborn Hospitalist at Adventist Health Family Birthplace, steps into the role as the Oregon Pediatric Society celebrates 50 years as a non-profit organization supporting pediatric providers and advocating for Oregon’s children. We are grateful for her leadership, and her commitment to our members and the children and families they serve.
Dr. McCall shared what she hopes to accomplish in the year ahead: “I’m excited to lead an organization that brings together pediatric clinicians from every corner of Oregon, rural and urban, community practice and academic. In the year ahead, I hope to strengthen our advocacy, deepen member engagement, and make sure OPS feels like a home for every pediatric clinician in the state. Health equity will be central to that work, because every child in Oregon deserves the chance to thrive.”
Joining Dr. McCall in leadership is Wendy Hasson, MD, FAAP, who now steps into the Board Vice President role, in addition to her existing role as the co-chair of the Oregon Pediatric Society Advocacy Committee. Dr. Hasson is the current PICU Medical Director at Randall Children’s Hospital. Her priorities include sustainable healthcare financing, reducing administrative burden, protecting pediatric and subspecialty capacity, supporting the pediatric workforce, and building community among pediatricians across the state. We look forward to the perspective and energy she brings to the Board.
Dr. Hasson described why she is excited to take on the role: “I’m excited to join the OPS Executive Committee because I believe pediatricians have an important voice in shaping the policies that affect Oregon’s children and families. Every day in the ICU, I see the impact of gaps in our healthcare system, and I’m passionate about turning those experiences into advocacy that improves care before children reach a crisis point. This is a critical moment for children’s health, and I’m honored to work on behalf of OPS and its members to ensure Oregon remains a place where children, families, and the pediatricians who care for them can thrive.”
Gratitude and ceremony
James Bishara, MD, MBA, FAAP now moves into the role of Immediate Past President. We are grateful to Dr. Bishara for his guidance and dedication to the Oregon Pediatric Society and to Oregon’s pediatric community over the past two years as the Board President. We are also deeply appreciative of Angela Zallen, MD, FAAP for her years of guidance, as she officially ends her role as Immediate Past President. Dr. Zallen has seen the organization through a lot of change, and her steadfast and thoughtful approach always seemed to be just what the organization needed.
No leadership transition is complete without a little ceremony. Long-time Board member, Art Jaffe, MD, FAAP, led the group through a swearing in using the AAP Red Book, a fitting choice for a room full of pediatric providers. It was a lighthearted, yet powerful moment, that reminded us how much we value the tradition and the people behind our organization’s work. His closing words were, “And above all, remember that our first obligation is to the children of Oregon, especially those whose voices are least likely to be heard. I accept this responsibility with humility, compassion, and good humor. So help me Hippocrates.”
The Oregon Pediatric Society welcomes our new Board officers, Dr. McCall and Dr. Hasson, and looks forward to the fresh ideas, strengths, and different perspectives they will add to our leadership team.
